CATASTROPHIC APOCALYPSE SPARED TO OUR MODEST EYES!
Not much
to say on this film. One more film of the schoolbook cinema of Senator
McCarthy. In fact, it is a cookbook. The Cook Book of the Pentagon on how to
cook or simmer the audience of films to make them ready for consumption in the
rising Cold War.
When you
have said that, you can add the chapter is air travel. Security is practically nonexistent
in the film. They smoke everywhere and all the time. The only thing it targets
is how to monitor the behavior of passengers trapped in a flying death machine
when the impending crash is announced.
Lack of
imagination? Certainly not. Just prudence and caution to ensure people will
accept the catastrophe and say nothing, not even a collective prayer. You can
cry. You can have a tantrum, provided it is limited in time and intensity. And
then you trust the pilot who is going to make the collective death of the crash
as easy-going as possible.
That was
a time when the audience was gullible and naively half-witted, and when I say
half, I am probably generous.
