Sigiriya, le Roc aux Lions

SHADOW IN THE NIGHT

SIGIRIYA’S SHINY LADIES

Jacques COULARDEAU, French & English translations

This edition of the Sigiri Graffiti set up in a dramatic form about the fate of King Kasyapa is dedicated to those who made my encounter with them and the Asparas on the Rock face possible.

First Sujeewa who welcomed me on the Centre of Eco-cultural Studies’ base in Diyakapilla  in July 2005. http://www.cessrilanka.com/

Second Sudarshani who lived at the top of a tree and always made fun of my love for elephants.

Third the monks of the Pidurangala Monastery  where I had the opportunity to climb to the top of their rock and spend a full night with the reclining Buddha next to the plaque of thanks of the monks to King Kasyapa who gave them this rock in exchange for the Sigiriya Rock.

That was a good time of discovery and meditation that meant a lot of interesting cogitation and mental improvement.

I kind of found some epiphany after five years of extreme vagrancy and ten more years of primeval misunderstanding.

The Dhammapada and Pali were my healing potions and my visionary organic rational hallucinogens that had been elaborated by twenty five centuries of absolutely sober wisdom.

No one needs soma, chrism, ayahuaska or tobacco to go up to the sky of luminous imagination and the heaven of human wisdom.

Festival de Musique Futuriste

Jacques COULARDEAU

*****

This story has to be dedicated to time and life. It is the result of meeting many people in the avenues of big Paris, gay as is well-known, and gay it is, indeed.

The songs were written to the music Kévin Thorez had previously composed. All the songs are from 2011-2012.

The dramatic story of Ilya and Vanya was written in 2013, integrating the lyrics of the songs as part of the story. It is a full homage to a young man who does not like his name to be quoted or uttered. Anonymous he will stay, just the way he likes it, and he likes many things.

The two characters carry endearing shortenings of Russian names. The names are masculine and the two shortenings are built on a feminine ending. I was attracted by this ambiguity for our birds of a feather.

The white European curse still at work

The Maya and the World, An Update

https://jacquescoulardeau.medium.com/the-maya-and-the-world-an-update-fac790ad8bb8

Native American civilizations were vastly destroyed by history particularly when the Europeans arrived. Diseases, wars of conquest, the eradication of religions and cultures that were not seen as compatible with Christianity, the thirst for gold and other precious metals or gems, and the systematic looting of natural resources caused a depletion of the Native American population by between 50 and 75%. Some say even more in some areas. Today, book after book, pyramid after pyramid, glyph after glyph we are rediscovering the greatness of these civilizations, even if some overdo it in this reevaluation. The Mayas had the concept of zero as a voided empty box containing nothing, though they did not have the concept of zero as the completion of a decimal, in their case a vigesimal group. Yet their mathematics was a lot ahead of what we had in Europe, though probably a lot less than what they had in the Arab world or China. We voraciously devoured the Americas and today these very same Americas are the scene of a new plague, pandemic, or whatever, and this time it also kills more native Americans or Blacks or Browns than whites. History has a tendency in some situations to repeat itself.

Gay et Tragique. Gay and dramatic.

ILYA AND VANIA

TWO LOVE BIRDS . . . OF A FEATHER

Jacques Coulardeau

Just as I was attracted by the morbid merging love of Dracula and Mina. Love is, in a way, losing yourself in the other while the other loses himself or herself in you. Losing and loosening themselves into each other.

That’s the miracle of love and it has little to do with orientation, though we always have to consider the end from the very beginning and just as much as love is suffering, the end of love is exquisitely painful. Dukkha!

The story in a shortened version to hold within 80 minutes will come out soon at Zimbalam and most platforms under the title Synchrosome II Ilya and Vanya., with the voices of Kévin Thorez, Nad.X.Ka and Jacques Coulardeau.

Due to the worsening of the Covid - 19 pandemic, whose effects, despite the mass vaccination, which has already started in many countries, extending beyond the year 2021, we were forced to suspend the presence in person at the 12th ISAPL International Congress, at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal. Instead, we will hold the same Congress, online, from 3rd to 5th June, 2021, following the example of similar International Associations, still under the auspices of the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, which continues to give its full support.

We invite all scholars and students interested in the area of Applied Psycholinguistics to participate in the online 12th ISAPL International Congress, to be held, from 3rd to 5th June, 2021, organized by the honorary members of ISAPL, Prof. Leonor Scliar-Cabral (Florianopolis, Brazil) and Prof. Maria da Graça Pinto (Porto, Portugal) along with the ISAPL Board members and the Presidents of the 12th International Congress, Profs. João Torrão and Maria Teresa Roberto (Aveiro, Portugal). Following the included 8th Circular, important changes are proposed. Due to the 12th Congress successive date transfers, in whose Ordinary General Meeting, the new Board should be elected, it made vacant the most decisive ISAPL board positions, the President and the Secretary, an untenable situation, at the current moment. So, we are obliged to trigger the electoral process for online elections, one of the main topics of this issue. Please, follow the included procedures, altogether with the guidelines for proposing candidates, suggestions for the main topic for the 13th ISAPL International Congress, which will take place on 2024 and for its site.

Apocalypse Musicale

L’APOCALYPSE SELON SAINT JEAN

Adaptation Jacques Coulardeau

IC Thanksgiving 2018

THANKSGIVING 2018

Thursday, November 22

Illustrations, Annunzio Coulardeau, aka Hallah

The unnamed character in this long poem is trying to follow what is happening in his mind after the accident, after he fell to the ground unconscious when trying to get back up after tying up his shoe. He is entirely locked up in his own self and he is even seeing himself from outside himself, he is the watcher, and the watchee is there lying on the sidewalk and then later on suffering on a hospital bed.

The trauma is deep and brutal and he may have lost his own mind at some time in this descent into pain, the worst pain being that he was no longer the master of himself, and yet he fought for some revival, some responsibility, for some modesty if not bashfulness. Suffering from being unable to hide, and passing water became an ordeal and he had to do it in spite of all.

This unnamed character is trying to follow the strings that are within his reach, trying to re-emerge from this deep traumatic cesspool in which he is some kind of floating half rotten piece of wood that is losing its substance, impregnated with muddy water as it is. He pulls these strings. They resist. Yet he has to get out of the soup in which he is desolving.

In his post-traumatic pain and corrugation he tries not to get lost in translation as if he would be transmuted into some vaporous smog in a lightless empty void, floating fleshlessly and mindlessly. Some recollections resonate in his brain, torturing his desire to just pass away with the challenge to stand up and howl at his fear, his angst, his apprehensive revulsion. Going down the road feeling bad in the midnight hour when pushing the Dreadful Gate open.

Welcome to Family Emulation

Anne & Christopher Rice, A Family Fiction

https://jacquescoulardeau.medium.com/anne-christopher-rice-a-family-fiction-df83915cebb6

I am in the process of fulfilling an important piece of research on Anne Rice’s novel Merrick, and the use of magic in the novel along with various references to cultures where magic is or was fundamental. She refers to Voodoo, Candomblé, Maya, Olmec, and even older rites and magics enabling contact with spirits, ghosts, and other supernatural beings within two fictional contexts she has used in many books, the Mayfair witches and Lestat de Lioncourt’s vampires, plus a millennium-old secret society observing and researching the fields of paranormal capabilities, the Talamasca.

Within this research, I have hereby collected all the reviews on Anne Rice, and Christopher Rice I could find in my readable computer archives. I am missing some because at least two diskettes refuse to be read because they were configured on an old dead Windows 95 IBM computer, at least three technical generations ago. Sorry about that. I will one day get the hard copies out of their files and scan them if I can find them, or I will ask a service company to extract the data from the various diskettes I have, not to mention a Windows 98 computer of the late 1990s.

I offer you these reviews. There might be some repeats. Sorry about it. They are in the chronological order of the original publishing dates of the novel. I have integrated some reviews of Christopher Rice’s works as some kind of dare or challenge. The mother and the son are quite complementary, cultivating their own private gardens on their own, with probably some communication between them.

These 33,000 words are the reviews of most books by AnneRice and Christopher Rice from which the study on Anne Rice's "Merrick" will be built trying to elaborate on the theme of magic and various cultural references. Anne Rice and her son Christopher Rice are both in subnatural and supernatural literature but they do not compete because they are more complementary than conflictual. In other words, they each have their own gardens and they do not invade one another's flowerbeds. Anne Rice is in vampires, werewolves, witches, and extreme erotic (understatement, rather pornographic) dystopia (though she would say it is utopia). Christopher Rice is in extreme suspense literature, extreme violence, and extremely realistic and even graphic eroticism. The early death of Stan Rice, the husband and father of these writers, was something like a trauma. Stan Rice was a poet

Sigiri Graffiti

SIGIRI GRAFFITI

PRICELESS SPIRITUAL HERITAGE

FROM YESTERDAY’S HUMANITY

TO THE HUMANITY OF TOMORROW

Diyakapilla, October 5, 2005

Olliergues, December 27-31, 2005

After Sri Lanka's King Kasyapa’s fall in 495 CE, Sigiriya goes back to being religious probably with pilgrimages. Many visitors are proved and documented. Inside the Mirror Wall covered with a special lustrous plaster, all along the gallery under the frescoes, between the 9th and the 13th centuries, essentially between the 9th and 11th centuries, visitors inscribed small poems in traditional form composed of two or four lines in full agreement with contemporary poetics. Note this confirms a high educational level among the visitors. These small poems, known as the Sigiri Graffiti, are most of the time signed and we thus can know the names and social positions of their authors. There are about 1,200 poems of which about 900 have been published: 685 by Dr. S. Paranavitana in 1956 and 150 in 1990 and 1994 by Benille Priyanka who is working on the remaining 300 or so. In the following selection, I used the year of publication, 56, 90, and 94, and the number in these publications to identify them.

This is a translation in English and in French of a selection of Sigiri Graffiti.

Supreme Court and Constitution

The US Supreme Court,

A Universal Lesson in Constitutional Right

Jacques Coulardeau & Ivan Eve

This essay studies the Case of California's Proposition 8 from its adoption by the voters in November 2008 to the most recent US Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2013. This essay is essentially centered on the legal and constitutional side of the case and the arguments dealing with Amendment 14 to the US Supreme Court, Article III of teh US Constitution, and the concepts of due process of law, equal protection of the laws, strict scrutiny, standing, all concepts that should be universal in all legal and judiciary systems in the world. The case then provides the world with a full demonstration of these judicial human rights that in fact should define the concept of Habeas Corpus.

This case deals with same-sex marriage in California. The US Supreme Court refused to rule on the constitutionality of Proposition 8. They vacated and remanded the Federal Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit's ruling on the case because the people speaking for the State of California did not have the necessary standing. That ruling indirectly affirms the ruling of the Federal District Court that had declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional. Though it does not create a legal void in California, this ruling encourages the ProtectMarriage organization to start a new round of legal proceedings in the California Supreme Court.

This long essay would not have been possible if the first and shorter version had not been encouraged by one of its first readers as follows:

I think your argumentation and logic is good. You shouldn’t be entering the rest of the discussion, maybe you can quote all the experts or send back to what was said in a footnote, but it is not your point. You are following the logic of the legal and constitutional system: Amendment 14, the Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court. What will happen, we can’t be sure, but you can project yourself in the future, and you are already doing it, by saying that the Supreme Court, despite taking a lot of time (which can also be to get the “temperature,” the mood of the country within the next few months), is very unlikely to commit itself with such an important issue. And your logic shows just that . . .

So, in short, your approach is the most valuable as the case starts in California (and its norms) and shifts to the federal level (multiple norms): they all thrive under the US Constitution and Amendment 14.”

Haendel's Agrippina

HANDEL'S AGRIPPINA MODERN INTERPRETATIONS AND THE ROLE OF COUNTERTENORS [Format Kindle]

Jacques COULARDEAU , Ivan EVE  Annunzio COULARDEAU

Handel's Agrippina was composed for the Carnival of Venice in 1709. It counts three male voices in the countertenor pitch and range in those days most often held by castratos. Centering on Jean-Claude Malgoire's 2004 production first to come out on DVD, comparing it with two other productions on DVD that came out in the following years, but also with the recent production of Handel's Faramondo, we study the four different dramatic values of countertenors in Handel's operas. This leads us to an in-depth study of the re-emergence of countertenors after at least two centuries of quasi-silence. Is it a transient fad, a freaky sham or a long-running phenomenon? We will meet with two opposed opinions: Russell Oberlin's in 2004 and Laura E. DeMarco's in 2002. I will more or less follow Russell Oberlin who considers they allow the production of Handel's operas and oratorios that had disappeared for two hundred and fifty years. Why can we witness now this epiphanic resurrection? We are far from having all the answers to that simple question.
