In a western territory, not yet a state, the big ranchers want the land to be open for their horses and cattle to roam freely. Farmers want to enclose their fields to protect them against roaming cattle. The big ranchers have a militia in their pay composed of all sorts of bullies and violent people in mind and in body, the harder, the crueler, the better, for the badly named Liberty Valance.

Only Tom Doniphon, an expert pistolero who knows how to shoot any gun, refuses this situation. He gets an ally when a newly graduated and certified lawyer arrives and becomes Tom’s friend, if it can be called an alliance since the lawyer is simply encouraged to do what he wants, that is to provoke the bad boy Liberty Valance, so that the two will exchange bullets, and Tom will have the fastest bullet in the city and the bad boy will fall dead in the dust.

The lawyer, Ransom Stoddard, will be the governor of the new state, a US senator, and a few more things, based on the reputation, the legend that he killed Liberty Valance. No one, not even him, wants to reject the legend. That’s not good for politics, at least for one’s political career. That’s what history is built on. A mythical deep fake and a lot of false eavesdropping.
