Dérive Morale Graduelle

Anna Deavere-Smith explore dans cette pièce un thème fondamental de l’histoire américaine, le fait que les questions éthiques et sociales fondamentales sont prises d’une dérive systématique qui les réduisent à des événements superficiels et sans valeur profonde. Ainsi la question de l’esclavage est passée sous silence et remplacée par les manquements et faux pas de Bill Clinton avec une interne caucasienne de la Maison Blanche. La presse est devenue un élément essentiel de la mise en scène du Président. Cette pièce déjà ancienne (fin du siècle précédent) n’a pas pu prendre en compte l’évolution des vingt dernières années, et pourtant elle montre une chose essentielle. Quand le théâtre d’agit-prop tente de révéler quelque chose dissimulé par une construction idéologique artificielle, elle identifie un arbre qui était caché mais cet arbre à son tour cache la forêt et dissimule quelque chose d’autre. Dénoncer le crime contre l’humanité qu’était l’esclavage aux USA revient à cacher la résistance extraordinaire des esclaves qui ont ainsi produit le ferment qui a donné une culture mondiale aujourd’hui largement dominante. Si on ne voit que le fouet, on oublie les mélopées rythmées des esclaves qui ainsi contrôlent leur productivité et produisent notre culture d’aujourd’hui. Toute simulation peut révéler une vérité dissimulée, une révélation en terme biblique, une apocalypse, mais elle dissimule à son tour une autre vérité. Le théâtre d’agit-prop ne devient-il pas lui-même une dérive, qui fait du bien à Huckleberry Finn, mais qu’en est-il de l’histoire humaine après Bill Clinton et sa dérive sexuelle ?

 

Gradual Moral Slippage

Anna Deavere-Smith explores in this play a fundamental theme in American history, the fact that basic ethical and social issues are caught up in a systematic drift – a downward slippage in her terms – that reduces them to superficial events without any deep value. Thus, the issue of slavery is ignored and replaced by the failures and missteps of Bill Clinton with a Caucasian intern in the White House. The press has become an essential part of the President's staging of himself (not herself yet) and his action. This already old play (end of the previous century) could not take into account the evolution of the last twenty years, and yet it shows something essential. When agitprop theater tries to reveal something hidden by an artificial ideological construction, it identifies a tree that was hidden, but this tree in turn hides the forest and conceals something else. Denouncing the crime against humanity that slavery was in the United States is tantamount to hiding the extraordinary resistance of the slaves who thus produced the ferment that gave rise to a world culture that is now largely dominant. If we only see the whip, we forget the rhythmic melodies of the slaves who thus controlled their productivity and produced our present culture. Any simulation may reveal a hidden truth, a revelation in Biblical meaning, an apocalypse, but it, in turn, hides another truth. Doesn't agitprop theater itself become a downward slippage which brings some good feeling to Huckleberry Finn, but what about human history after Bill Clinton’s sexual slippage?
