The Mayas have their roots in South America and the Southern Pacific
The cultivation of cacao and the preparation of chocolate from it, as a drink, fermented we believe, plus the use of cacao beans as some kind of currency have been attributed to the Mayas, with maybe some link to the Olmecs before them, and that is a mistake.
On October 29, 2018, a team of archaeologists published an article about their discovery the absolute proof that chocolate was known and prepared from wild cacao trees in Central America in the Upper Amazon valley at least then 5300 years ago, that is to say, 1500 years earlier than thought so far in Mesoamerica.
