Mussorgsky
deals with the shift from a corrupted authoritarian and even dictatorial regime
to a new generation of leaders who are going to open the country and bring it
to some kind of prestige if not greatness. This is done, both in the libretto and
in the music, extremely well and the corruption is depicted with precision and
even at times some cruel exposition. The music varies from popular to
marvelously modern and the end of the opera is so spectacular and would require
so many special effects that the solution chosen in 2007 in Barcelona is a
miracle of sobriety.
